Onboarding Support for Families of Individuals with Autism and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD)

Project Overview

This capstone project was developed to improve the onboarding experience for families of individuals with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Many families receive a large amount of information about services, eligibility, and available resources, making the process confusing and overwhelming. The goal of this project was to create a clear, easy-to-follow learning resource that helps families understand the next steps with confidence.

The Problem

Families often struggle to navigate disability services because information is spread across multiple sources and contains unfamiliar terms and complex processes. This can lead to confusion, delays, and increased stress during an already challenging time.

• Parents and family members

• Individuals with autism or I/DD
• Anyone beginning the disability services onboarding process

Project Goal

The goal of this project was to design an accessible onboarding resource that simplifies complex information using clear language, organized content, visual support, and step-by-step guidance.

Design Process

The project followed the instructional design process by conducting a needs analysis, creating a storyboard, developing a prototype, gathering mentor feedback, and revising the product based on recommendations. Revisions included simplifying content, improving navigation, adding a checklist, and enhancing accessibility.
