Needs Analysis
The first step of this project was conducting a needs analysis to better understand the challenges faced by families of individuals with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Research and field experience showed that many families felt overwhelmed by the amount of information they received and needed a simpler, more organized onboarding experience.
Storyboard
Before building the prototype, I developed a storyboard to plan the structure and flow of the learning experience. The storyboard organized the content into logical sections and identified learner interactions, navigation, and feedback to create a user-friendly experience.
Prototype Development
Using the storyboard as a guide, I created an interactive prototype that presented information through clear headings, simple navigation, and visual support. The prototype focused on helping families understand the onboarding process step by step.
Feedback and Revisions
Feedback from my field mentor was an important part of the design process. Based on the recommendations, I made several improvements to strengthen the learning experience, including:
- Simplified the language and instructions
- Added a checklist for families
- Improved page organization and navigation
- Added visuals to support understanding
- Enhanced accessibility and readability
These revisions resulted in a more effective and learner-centered instructional product.
Final Product
The completed prototype reflects an iterative instructional design process that combined research, planning, prototype development, mentor feedback, and revision. The final product provides a clear and accessible onboarding resource that supports families as they begin navigating autism and I/DD services.
